Berlin is big on street art and street culture – whether it’s the amazing food or beer which you can pick up anywhere, or the awesome street-side bars and venues that lead you to settle into a long night of partying.
While the city is littered with street-art around the East Side Gallery and other spots, I wanted to continue to follow my mantra of traveling differently and querying all the spots that aren’t normally traversed by the mountains of tourists that are in Europe in this pandemic revenge traveling season.
Teufelsberg therefore stood out as exactly the type of destination that would suit me to experience Berlin street-art culture. What’s not to love; it has a built in hike as well as supposedly having panoramic views of Berlin. That’s a pretty big claim given how big and modern Berlin is as a city – I don’t see how you can capture it in essence in a photo the same way as say Prague or Venice. Nevertheless, I set out to find out.
The first part of the journey is the train ride out to the outskirts of the city, followed by a brief hike through a forested area depicted below and leading up to a raised area where some other travelers were also looking out over the view and sighting the Teufelsberg from a distance.
You then continue through the tracks and are greeted with the entrance. Once you make your way in there’s a number of outdoor art installations before you head up the stairs.
Upstairs has multiple levels full of impressive street works. These are much better than a lot of the ones around Berlin and you can see the effort that has been put into each piece.
Once you make it to the upper levels you do get a great view of Berlin, albeit a bit far to be captured by my Pixel 7. You can also see what looks like Berlin’s nuclear power plant.
I then dodged a few mosquitos on the way back down the hill through the track and scootered back to Berlin.
I ah.. also found the Berlin branch of Brew Dog which warranted a visit.
Very interesting little gitarella and something unique here in Berlin. I’m still not sure where this trip is going at this stage, so I’m going to keep the option to extend here in Berlin in reserve. The next logical stop is Amsterdam, but travel options and weather do not look good. Stay tuned to see how I go.
