I didn’t realise this until I arrived here but Vienna, Austria has been a long term contender as one of the world’s most livable cities, and regularly beats out Sydney and Melbourne on the rankings.
It’s easy to see why, it’s a modern city that reminds me of all the comforts of home. The shopping is incredible, the public transport would put Melbourne’s tram network to tears, and the bike infrastructure is truly remarkable.
My only complaint is that it’s so much like home it’s hard to find things to do here – there’s only a few ‘obvious’ tourist attractions which I kind of want to avoid. It’s not that I’m unhappy to see a cathedral or two, or Beethoven’s apartment – it’s just that I know there must be more action here than meets the eye and I’m not sure I can find it in time.
One thing that did catch my eye is the Danube river, which is surrounded by fantastic bike infrastructure – I took a quick walk to see what it was like.
It’s got potential for an adventure for sure. I’ll see what I can arrange!
