We arrived in Kyoto after a terribly long train trip from the snow. Our train was delayed because of inclement weather (apparently this year is record snow falls for Japan, explains our great time so early in the season.
We arrived to stunning night-time landscapes and a very busy city centre. Here are some of the initial photos from walking around. We were staying in Gion, which is like Geisha central with all the old architecture and preserved facades.
After a night’s rest, we set out for a walking tour and to find some of the famous shrines and landmarks of Kyoto. It was way busier than we were expecting. We had heard whispers that Kyoto was experiencing over-tourism, and they were not wrong. It’s at least as bad (if not worse) than Venice.
We have a few things to do around this region, but we’re unlikely to be going further south than Osaka this trip. For me the main attraction was the Japanese Alps, which didn’t disappoint, but I won’t necessary spend too long touring around cities, especially when they are this crowded.
