Dark Light

I always walk a lot when I land at a new city – Naples, Athens, Venice were all thoroughly trodden under my keen travelers boots (containing my rather sore feet). With Berlin that’s been a challenge because of just how big it is as a city – I had to use the metro system extensively (which was easy) and I had a bit of trouble hiring a bike from my hostel (because they were out!).

I still walked a lot, especially around certain parts of Mitte which had awesome shopping and cafes – really interesting to see!

Today though I decided to walk north instead of exploring Mitte and I stumbled into the modern suburban landscapes of Prenzlauer Berg. It has a great modern Berlin vibe to it with beautiful buildings and street-level cafes and eateries. Here’s a sampling.

I kept following the road to get to the end and then stumbled across Mauerpark which was huge and is the site of a regular market and a spot for the locals to come and socialise. I was not there on market day, but there was a bar at the park which caught my eye. It’s really novel for an Australian to have this type of bar at a park – even if it exists it doesn’t have real German beer!

It was a fun afternoon and after a few Weissbiers I’m heading back to find somewhere to eat and settle into the evening.

At this stage I’m going to need to extend Berlin and spend some time in some of the excellent cafes here to plan the next leg of my trip. I’m tired of planning as I go so I think I’ll be planning the remainder of the trip through to conclusion just so I can actually enjoy my holiday as a holiday rather than as a bit of a job. Where will I land next? Find out next time.
