Dark Light

Valdobbiadene – which I will make my life’s mission to pronounce correctly (it’s not that I can’t onboard the pronunciation, it’s just that by the next morning I’m already confusing it with the competing pronunciation) – is Veneto’s famous Unesco Heritage listed Prosecco wine growing region.

There was a helpful map at the restaurant which shows the whole region and where we were exploring around the Cartizze part of Vadobbiadene.

The map shows we are in the ‘Cartizze’ part of Valdobbiadene

And of course what better way to gain our freedom around this beautiful region than with the trusty e-mountain-bike. Here’s what happened after we set off on our little tour of the vineyards.

We made our way to the ‘Osteria senza oste’ which is the ‘Tavern without a host’ a little drinking spot amongst some of the grapevines which is unmanned with cute little vending machines and a self-payment station. Travelers had left many notes inside from around the world.

The countryside is just gorgeous, so many opportunities for amazing landscape photos. The weather seems super gloomy and like it might rain but it made for interesting photos with lower light and we really didn’t experience any heavy rain.

One benefit of the weather was of course that it scared the tourists away, so it seemed like we had the whole town to ourselves. We soon picked a spot to try some Cartizze style Prosecco.

After this brief stop we moved back through the vineyards to find a place for lunch.

We still had quite a few hours on the e-bike hire, and I was yet to actually hire one for a long enough ride where the battery has run completely dry. So we challenged ourselves to a steep descent on the mountains to try and get some panoramic views. Trailforks showed a blue trail to descent from, which we planned to do after climbing along the road for about 11km.

To our surprise, we had enough battery to make the full climb, even after a full day’s touring around the town. We tried to descend through the track, but like many blue-grade mountain bike tracks its hard to know if they’re on the easier side of things or the harder side. This one was probably on the harder side because it had some steep and narrow descents with rocky terrain that we would have needed to be very careful on.

After trying a few short segments on the trail, we opted to descend by the road, which felt like flying the whole way down the mountain. A great way to end a great day – so happy to have had the experience.
